Carresi del Molise : Storia di Antiche Tradizioni

La primavera è davvero sbalorditiva in Molise, quando la sua forte valenza simbolica nel rinnovo del ciclo della vita dà luogo alle più antiche e sorprendenti manifestazioni tradizionali. Nel Basso Molise (Portocannone, San Martino in Pensilis, Ururi), le corse dei carri appartengono al medesimo e antichissimo ciclo rituale della rinascita primaverile e dell’attesa del raccolto, teso a garantire la sopravvivenza della comunità.

Spring is truly stunning in Molise, when its strong symbolic value in renewing the cycle of life gives rise to the oldest and most amazing traditional events. In Lower Molise (Portocannone, San Martino in Pensilis, Ururi), wagon races belong to the same and very ancient ritual cycle of spring rebirth and waiting for the harvest, aimed at ensuring the survival of the community.

 

Nonostante il fatto che due paesi di origine albanese celebrino le manifestazioni, l’origine autoctona e sannitica del complesso cerimoniale è sostenuta da numerose testimonianze, smentendo così le supposizioni di una sua provenienza dall’altra sponda dell’Adriatico.
Le carresi fra gli eventi più attesi della popolazione basso-molisana. Si tratta di autentiche corse effettuate con carri trainati da buoi e guidati da audaci conducenti. A seconda dell’anno e del luogo, i contendenti per la vittoria sono le fazioni dei Giovani, Giovanotti e Giovanissimi. Tuttavia, tra i diversi paesi si possono notare alcune differenze, come la lunghezza del percorso o il premio destinato alla fazione vincitrice.

Despite the fact that two countries of Albanian origin celebrate the events, the autochthonous and Samnite origin of the ceremonial complex is supported by numerous testimonies, thus disproving assumptions of its origin from the other side of the Adriatic.
The carresi among the most eagerly awaited events of the Lower Molise population. These are authentic races carried out with ox-drawn carts driven by daring drivers. Depending on the year and place, the contenders for victory are the factions of the Giovani, Giovanotti e Giovanissimi. However, some differences can be seen between countries, such as the length of the course or the prize allocated to the winning faction.

 

A San Martino in Pensilis, si racconta che alcuni nobili, durante una battuta di caccia, si imbatterono nella salma di San Leo. Ognuno voleva portare con sé le sue spoglie, ma per evitare una lite decisero di affidarsi al volere del santo. Così, caricarono le spoglie sul carro e lo lasciarono libero di camminare senza guidarlo. Gli animali condussero il carro fino a San Martino. Un miracolo che ancora oggi si celebra con la tradizionale Carrese il 30 aprile.

In San Martino in Pensilis, the story goes that some nobles, during a hunting trip, came across the body of Saint Leo. Each wanted to take his remains with them, but to avoid a quarrel they decided to rely on the will of the saint. Thus, they loaded the remains onto the wagon and left it free to walk without driving it. The animals led the chariot all the way to St. Martin. A miracle that is still celebrated today with the traditional Carrese on April 30.

 

La leggenda di Portocannone ci parla invece di due possenti buoi che, guidati dalla Madonna di Costantinopoli, scelsero il luogo in cui sarebbe nato il Borgo con la chiesa dedicata alla Santa. I contadini non avevano idee chiare su dove costruire e così decisero di affidarsi alla volontà divina. I buoi fecero la loro scelta e il Borgo nacque lì. Un evento che viene ricordato ogni anno, il lunedì successivo alla Pentecoste.

The legend of Portocannone, on the other hand, tells us of two mighty oxen that, guided by Our Lady of Constantinople, chose the place where the Borgo with the church dedicated to the Saint would be born. The peasants had no clear ideas about where to build, so they decided to rely on the divine will. The oxen made their choice and the Borgo was born there. An event that is remembered every year on the Monday following Pentecost.

 

Ururi celebra invece il culto del legno della Croce. Secondo una leggenda, il pezzo di legno apparterrebbe alla croce su cui fu crocifisso Gesù Cristo, portato in Italia dalla Sant’Elena. Il paese celebra questa reliquia in una solenne processione durante la Carrese, il 3 Maggio.

Ururi instead celebrates the worship of the wood of the Cross. According to one legend, the piece of wood belongs to the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, brought to Italy by the St. Helena. The town celebrates this relic in a solemn procession during the Carrese, on May 3.

 

Infine è nostra premura sottolineare il profondo legame che gli abitanti dei tre paesi, hanno rispetto a questo evento e nutrono una solenne venerazione per i buoi della carrese, che renderebbe impensabile qualsiasi forma di maltrattamento.Finally, it is our concern to emphasize the deep bond that the inhabitants of the three villages, have with respect to this event and have a solemn reverence for the oxen of the Carrese, which would make any form of mistreatment unthinkable.
